still working to help God make this World a better place
“I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.”
Jesus said that during the Last Supper in which he not only gave himself to us sacramentally, in The Eucharist, but washed the feet of his disciples .He taught us to live by giving ourselves in the service of our communities. That is beautiful.
However, that day had a grotesque swing of the physical and emotional pendulum.
After that beautiful meal, Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane where, knowing what is soon to happen, he sweats blood, is betrayed by one of his closest Apostles, Judas Iscariot, is arrested and taken away. All his disciples flee. As predicted, later on Peter denes him three times.
Jesus not only enabled them - and now us - to see that our vocation is – as God’s - one of service.
Living for others is not just about altruism; it is a transformative journey that can enhance life in various ways. Acts of service can bring us closer to those we are serving; reducing stress and – as I have discovered - leading to a more fulfilling life.
As that great scientist Albert Einstein put it, 'Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.'
I know I need to look after my self – a gift from God. Not to look after a gift is an insult to the giver. Given my age, and proximity to my meeting Him face to face, the last thing I want to do is to insult God.
I need to look after others for Christ said “What you do to the least of mine, you do unto me.” (hence my short homilies.)
