In Genesis 2,15 we read that Adam was given the role of looking after the garden of Eden.
I believe my role is somewhat similar, not in the Garden of Eden but the places where I live and the people I meet. I need to love each one as I love myself.
I believe that, on Sundays, I am here, on God’s behalf, to look after you.
I am convinced that we are here to help - to serve - others: family, friends, colleagues – and members of any clubs to which we may belong.
Jesus explicitly stated, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,” (Mt 20:28; Mk 10:45). Jesus illustrated this by washing His disciples’ feet, showing that - as good parents know - true leadership and greatness - in a family or anywhere else - are expressed through humility and serving others.
According to Newton’s third law of motion, “To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Thus, the more we give, the more we receive. Generosity generates joy. This fact I have experienced in my life.
When preparing a couple for marriage, I always remind them that they are marrying for the benefit of their spouse. If both do that, their lives – as those of you who are married know – become a joy. My 57 years of commitment to priesthood have certainly been joyful. Thank God!
